Entering Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail
Most Machu Picchu articles start at the bus gate. This page is for the other door: finishing the classic Inca Trail through Inti Punku (the Sun Gate) and walking the royal approach into the citadel.
Our tour elevation for the citadel sector is about 8,089 ft (2,465 m) — lower than the high passes, warmer, and suddenly crowded with day visitors after days of quieter trail.
What trail hikers actually get on Day 4
- Pre-dawn march from Camp 3 to the Sun Gate
- Descent into the site and a guided visit on whatever circuit your ticket allows
- Limited “free” time — energy is low; prioritize with your guide
- Bus down to Aguas Calientes and train logistics back toward Cusco
