Where the classic trek begins

Piskacucho, widely known as kilometer 82, is the standard start of the classic 4-day Inca Trail. After permit and passport checks, hikers cross the Urubamba and step onto the trail network that will end at Machu Picchu.

Our data places the start near 8,700 ft (2,650 m) — already high, but gentler than Dead Woman's Pass still ahead.

What happens at the trailhead

  • Permit control and document checks
  • Bridge crossing over the Urubamba River corridor
  • Introduction to porters/cooks and Day 1 pace
  • First hours along the river valley toward Patallaqta views and Camp 1
GPS note. Piskacucho is waypoint PISKACUCHO on our track and tour hash #piskacucho.

Practical tips

  • Passport and permits ready before you leave Ollantaytambo.
  • Day 1 is “easier,” not flat — still pace for altitude.
  • Sun on the river section can be intense; start hydrated.
  • Keep rain shell accessible even in dry season.
